Sekonic & Skyport together at last! Print E-mail

I don’t have pocket wizards I’m a skyport guy, but I like to be able to trigger my light meter all from one hand. I know it’s possible to just keep an extra skyport transmitter on hand and fire it when i need to trigger the flash but I like to be able to have my other hand free to block a light or balance myself on a latter. I noticed that on the sekonic L-558 meter that there was a nice empty slot when you take out the Pocket Wizard module. So I order an extra battery cover from sekonic and cut a hole in it and stuck a Skyport transmitter on it. It’s not pretty but it works and it still fits back into the carrying case. Also one should note you lose the weather seal you had before. One way to get it back would be to take some electrical tape around the edges or use a silicone sealant to stick it on permanently. I decided not to go the non permanent route because you never know when you might need a spare transmitter. Another alternative would be to use an adapter that would screw into the 1/4 socket and then attach your transmitter to that. It would stick out bad but it would accomplish the same thing by letting you trigger the lights with one hand.

Below are some images that show the modification with some notes. I recommend a dremel cutting tool it worked great for this project. The L-558 is no longer offered but you can find great deals on it on ebay. This mod might work for the new L-778 but I don't have one to confirm with. Happy cutting and comments are welcome.

PS. Modify at your own risk. I'm not responsible if you mess smoothing up

This is the additional door I ordered from sekonic. I believe it was around $8 us.
skyport-2
This is the view from the back. It's mounted with Velcro so it can be removed as an extra transmitter if need be.
skyport-3
This is a side view now you can see where it looks a little ugly. This can be fixed with black tape or black silicone if you prefer more permanent.

The sync cord wraps around and stays in place very well. I’d like to have a little bit of a shorter one so if anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
skyport-5
I cut a little bit of the grove that way to the cord could come out o f the bottom flush. This way the back door would stay in place better.
skyport-6
This is an additional view as you can see by cutting away the grove the cord can lay flush now.
skyport-8
This is the little piece of Velcro that holds the transmitter on.
skyport-9
This is more of a close up so you can see how the transmitter rest in the door.
skyport-10
It fits nice and snug in the case still with the skyport transmitter installed.
skyport-11
This is a view of the case shut as you can see there in no bump and its fits perfectly.
skyport-12
Just encase I still carry my Pocket Wizard module and extra door if I need to use pocket wizard on a shoot.
skyport-14
This is a view of door after it was cut. It’s not pretty but it works. Cut in small stages a little at a time to get it just right.

I've been hunting for a Sekonic Skyport transmitter module for years. It's disappointing that neither Elinchrom nor Sekonic have produced one, given how much smaller skyport is than pocket wizards, you would think it would be easy.

I jumped at your post thinking someone had finally produced one. The two button approach isn't too hard, but it's a pain.
